Bio:

Jeffrey Kaplan is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Before coming to UNCG, he was a volunteer faculty member at Mount Tamalpais College (formerly called ‘the Prison University Project’), which is the only accredited liberal arts college in the country that teaches all of its classes inside a prison. He received his PhD from UC Berkeley and his MPhil from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. Before that, he was an undergraduate at Williams College and Oxford University. His research is primarily in the philosophy of law and philosophy of language. Dr. Kaplan is also the founder and director of the UNCG Prison Education Program, which provides academic programming for people incarcerated at Federal Correctional Institution: Butner Medium II. In 2024, the Governor of North Carolina awarded Dr. Kaplan the highest honor state employees can receive, in recognition of his educational work in prisons. Dr. Kaplan has won six teaching awards.
